I am sure while doing any DIY projects related to Home Improvement you would have come across quite a bit of tools. I am trying to list down few popular ones which should be present in Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced DIYer Toolkit.

Beginner Level


Claw Hammer

A Claw hammer is DIY home improvement absolute essential. It’s a tool that serves for both pounding a nail into a surface and extracting it from somewhere. One can recognize it by the slow curve at the top onto the shape of a claw. While one end is flat for the purpose of pounding the nails in, the other end splits into a “V” and is the part of the hammer that one can use for extracting nails.



A level is a building tool that is used to establish the horizontal and vertical alignment. There are several types of levels available in the market such as the Carpenters Level, Torpedo Level, Line level, etc. The post-and-pipe level and bull’s eye levels have been designed for hands-free use. A more fancy is the digital laser level that is self-calibrating.


Locking Pliers

This tool is known by several other names such as mole grips/wrench or vise grips. With the help of an over-centre action, these can be locked into the required position and the spacing of the jaw can be adjusted with a bolt on the handle. Several configurations such as locking clamps, needle-nose locking pliers, locking wrenches are available in various shapes and sizes to suit the needs of the user.



A screwdriver is a tool used for driving into or removing nails from a surface. A standard screwdriver has a handle to control it with and a shaft that is used for the actual driving or removal by rotating.
1. Flat-Head: A flat-head screwdriver is designed to be used on slotted screws. It has a flat head which fits into the slot on the slotted screws.
2. Cross-Headed: A cross-headed screwdriver is designed to be used on screws with a cross shape on them into which the crossed head of the screw fits.
3. Electrical Detection: These are screw drivers used for determining electrical output.


Measuring Tape

A tape measure can be used for all measuring purposes. The most common type of tape measure is a retractable one that has a hook at the end which can be put on the end of an object for making the measuring easier. A measuring tip can be used for measuring in tight spaces. Another is a Long tape that is used for measuring long distances, and is reeled and can be unwound by pulling from one end reeled back in with the help of a handle on the side.

Adjustable Wrench

A tool that is known as an adjustable wrench in the US and adjustable spanner in the UK is a wrench, the jaw of which can be adjusted for using with various sizes as opposed to a conventional fixed spanner.



A saw is a tool with a blade, wire or chain with toothed edges that used for cutting through surfaces. The toothed edge is placed against the surface and then moved back and forth to cut it. There are several types of saws that use different forms of energy such as a hand saw, power saw, etc. The most commonly used saw is the hand saw which has a thick blade to cut through the material. Others are crosscut saw, hacksaw, Japanese saw, mitre saw, etc.



Known by several names such as pry bar, wrecking bar, jimmy, etc. is a metal bar with a curved end with flattened points. It is used typically as a lever to separate or force apart two objects. Nailed wooden crates, prying apart boards and removal of nails are the most common uses of a crowbar.

Expert Level



Drills should be bought on the basis of frequency of usage and purpose of usage. They are available at various prices making it possible to buy them at a reasonable cost. There are several types of drills available in the market such as a cordless drill, rechargeable cordless drill, etc. Drills need to be taken care of very carefully and maintained regularly. The vents should be unclogged with preferably a paintbrush to avoid damage to the motor and overheating. They should also be lubricated regularly to avoid damaging it.



A jigsaw made of saw blade and electric motor, it allows a person to cut to angles up to forty-five degrees. These can be a little difficult to control, but are great for making cuts in plywood or materials that are thin almost however you want.
